Disclaimer: Any medicinal benefits given here are a product of my own research and as such should not be taken over the advice of trained medical professionals. If you are ill, please go and see a doctor. Always make sure that anything you consume is 100% safe. If you are pregnant, consult your doctor or midwife before consuming something you haven’t tried before.
I am very passionate about sharing what I’ve learned with others at no cost to you but the time it takes to read, learn and implementing and making it your own. Research everything for yourself. Knowledge and Practice makes a world of difference with everything you do, including magick. Knowledge is Power…literally! In magick we use what we like and dispose of what you don’t. You may want to use other methods, combine sometimes, create, and it is totally up to you, but do your homework. It is up to you how you utilize this information.
As we talk about different herbs and essential oils, please remember that you should always test out your potions on a small patch of skin before using them. For sensitive areas, dilute the oil with a carrier oil
There are two books I recommend for reference to keep on hand. The Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews by Scott Cunningham and The Complete Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Sourcebook by Julia Lawless. Julia’s book is a complete source for the scientific and historical processes and uses of plants and its extracts. Scott’s book is all the recipes you need to create and make magick! This blog is just an outline of both and it’s magickal uses and how we can put them into our everyday lives.
The word “aromatherapy” literally means therapy through aroma or scent, without specifying the source of the scent.
Aromatherapy treats the mind and the body together. The scent of the essential oil used can have a powerful effect on the emotions while the oils chemistry affects the body.
A Magickal Mixture
Herbs and essential oils have a creative powers and go hand in hand in the creations of your magickal potions and oils. You cannot have one without the other. Essential oils are made from the extract of plants and used in different methods such as being mixed with a carrier oil to dilute and be more effective for human consumption or use. All of which gives herbs another way to be used in our everyday lives and our magical workings and rituals.
Through herbs and essential oils, it makes it a bit easier to incorporate being a witch or Wicca into your everyday life. You can use magickal mixtures without anyone even knowing of your potions. They’ll be none the wiser. And I am not saying putting spells on your friends and family but using spell work to protect your home and all who dwell within and all who come through our doors by using our potions in Home Protection spells, Gift Giving Blessings, Blessing oils, and we can talk all day about all the different uses. In this blog, we are just going to outline some important stuff and some popular witchy tips.
Herbs have been used in healing remedies since man started walking this earth. Through ingesting they found plants that made them feel better. The science of which evolved as we as humans evolved.
Now, researchers have opened a whole new world of ways to heal the mind and body with different therapies using herbs, herbal teas, and essential oils. They have found that all of our senses can be adjusted by using different methods, depending on what is needed.
Smell is obviously our favorite for most times we have experienced for ourselves as scents and sounds can create different reactions emotionally. It may bring calm to our personal space or help motivate or give us a burst of energy. Herbs and essential oils have proven to relieve headaches and muscle aches, slow down bleeding or clotting, lip balms, skin creams, and that list goes on and on and on.
When doing healing magick for another, be sure you have permission from that person.
In Herb magick, just as in any other form of magick, you must raise & release energy. There are many vessels and methods that can be used to accomplish this.
One of the most effective ways is through our emotions. Emotions are the way we feel at the current moment. These feelings may come in response to what we see, smell, hear, feel, taste, think, or have experienced. Emotions can affect our future thoughts and behaviors. Some techniques used to assist and promote herbal and essential oils are through topical application, aromatic, or internal application.
Most essential oils are produced by steam distillation. Citrus Oils by expression from the peel of the fruit. We use the leaves, roots, seeds, wood, and flowers. Depending on the herb or floral, will depend on how it is processed.
For delicate flowers like jasmine and tuberose, the technique called Concretes is used in order to capture the scent. This cannot be done through steam distillation because it affects the odor of the flower. Flower Water is the water created by steam distillation. Absolute is the process by separating out the wax from compound. Gum resin exudes from trees and then steam distillates from the crude. Balsams are exudates of various trees and shrubs and used in a base for the production of certain essential oils.
Topical applications can affect aromatic, bloodstream, skin, and systemic. The techniques include direct application, massage, balancing touch massage techniques, baths, compresses, reflexology/reflex therapy.
Aromatic techniques are direct inhalation, diffusion, perfumes or colognes, fans or vents. It affects the memory, hormones, emotions, and respiratory system.
Internal application techniques are sublingual, capsules, beverages, or cooking/food and it affects the bloodstream, and digestive system.
In our everyday lives we use all three of these techniques. Lotions and shampoos, massage oils, air fresheners, teas, bath salts, home cleaners, medications, perfumes, and many other ways. It’s an easy way for us to put our magickal spin on our everyday lives.
In medical practices it is the substance or oils themselves and their biochemical effects that are central, while in the home uses of essential oils it is the aroma that counts and the pleasure of the scent is the main reason for using oils.
Magickal Herbs
Knowing the medicinal properties of herbs can also help conjure up what you are trying to achieve. Using herbs such as plantain leaf and comfrey can help heal wounds and burns. Lemon Balm helps ease bee stings, headaches, and colds. There is so much to learn about herbs and how they can be used and helpful in our daily lives. Way to many to contain them in this blog post about herbs and essential oils when thinking about witchcraft.
What I want you to take away from this post is that what you can do with herbs and essential oils is endless. And by using your witchy magic skills, you can use magic in your everyday life with no one being the wiser.
Always do your research before using any herbs or carrier oils. Always research the best vessel for your conjure, such as lotion, oil, balm, massage oil, and the list goes on and on. Then test on your skin in a small patch before using anything on your body.
